Pilgrims and Pilgrimage

This is the first time the important and multi faceted topic of Pilgrims and Pilgrimage has featured at a Medieval Studies Forum meeting. Two exciting external speakers will attend the meeting and be discussing pilgirmage from their perspectives: Martin Locker from UCL will be giving a presentation based on his research that set out to explore the link between the landscape and the pilgrim in Medieval Britain while John Jenkins from the University of York will discuss the experience of pilgrimage in relationship to English cathedrals that has arisen from the University's project.

Reconstructing the Tudor Kitchens of Hampton Court

Marc Meltonville, Food Historian at Historic Royal Palaces, will be giving a talk as part of the HLF funded 'Woking Palace and its Park' project. Marc gave a facscinating lecture to the Society on the Georgian kitchens at Kew a couple of years ago and is well known for his television programmes.

The lecture is free but places are limited and must be reserved in advance. Please see the attached flyer for details.

Woking Palace Excavation Open Day

At the close of the seventh and final season of excavations on this important medieval and Tudor site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, there is to be a Special Archaeological Open Day, hosted by the Friends of Woking Palace. In addition to guided tours of the trenches there will be a display of finds recovered from the site together with a range of stalls hosted by local heritage bodies.  Parking is either in Old Woking or at Hoebridge School from where a minibus shuttle service will run to Woking Palace between 11am and 4.30pm approx.

Archaeological investigation of a probable medieval ironworking site at Coldharbour Cottage, Lower Mousehill Lane, Milford, Surrey

Castles and Church Towers

The Medieval Studies Forum has arranged a meeting at the Leatherhead Institute on the topic of 'Castles and Church Towers'. Full details have been sent to members. Speakers include Michael Shapland and Terry Carlysle plus a number of Forum members. The day will also include a presentation by Jo Richards on the recently completed Villages Study Project looking at Esher.
