The Medieval Mind - A Study Day

The Medieval Studies Forum has organised a study day to be held at East Horsley. Speakers include Professor John Henderson on 'Understanding Plague in Late Medieval Italy' and Dr Sophie Page on 'Magic and Religion in the Late Middle Ages'. In addition a number of members of the Forum will be giving presentations. Please see the attached programme and application form for details.

Members Day - Medieval Studies Forum

The next meeting of the Medieval Studies Forum will take place on Saturday 3rd December at the Surrey History Centre, Woking and will be a "Members Day" for presentations by members on current research and interests.
 
Richard Neville has agreed to speak on the Norfolk Churches Graffiti Project and how this might be extended to Surrey; Mary Alexander will speak about medieval Christmas festivities at the Royal Palace of Guildford. Rob Briggs. Brian Creese  and Peter Balmer will also be sharing some of their current research.
 

Medieval Studies Forum and Villages Study Group Joint Meeting - Test pitting and Villages Studies

Dr Carenza Lewis, well known from television in programmes such as Time Team and more recently Michael Woods’ series on Kidworth, has agreed to give the keynote presentation at a joint meeting of the Medieval Studies Forum and the Villages Study Group on Saturday 12th March 2011.

"Medieval Communication Routes"

A day conference on topics related to the development of medieval communication routes within the County of Surrey, focusing on roads, bridges, causeways etc.

The day will start with a general introduction by Prof John Blair, illustrated by his ongoing research along the valley of the Upper Thames. This will be followed by shorter presentations on specific examples within Surrey. The afternoon will conclude with an informal open session where indivdual research can be presented and discussed.

Villages Study Group Workshop on Manorial Records

11.00am          Isabel Sullivan:  ‘An Introduction to Manorial Documents'.  Isabel is an archivist with an interest in Latin working at the History Centre

                       Matthew Piggott:  ‘Manorial Documents: their survival and how to locate them.'  Matthew is also an archivist at the Centre and will demonstrate the use of the online Manorial Document Register

Surrey's Medieval Towns

By popular request, the autumn meeting of the Forum this year will be devoted to Surrey's medieval towns, beginning to carry forward the thinking in Martin O'Connell's 'Historic Towns in Surrey' in 1977 (SyAS Research Volume 5), Dennis Turner's contribution on towns in the 1984 'Archaeology of Surrey to 1540' and the contributions by Phil Andrews and John Schofield in the 2004 'Aspects' volume.
