Surrey Archaeological Society

This will be the first weekend for the community test pitting element of the Old Woking Project, to take place over three days in April. All test pitting for this event will be in the gardens of Rosemead, a private residence near the church.

On Saturday 13th April, we will be holding an open day event, where the community can simply show up with no prior booking. Activities will be available for children especially, including Saxon re-enactors.

As part of the Old Woking communtity test pitting project, an open day event will take place over the February half term at the Lightbox, in Woking (Chobham Rd, Woking, GU21 4AA).

This will involve a special public exhibition displaying material found in the previous seasons of excavation at the settlement (2009-18) and information on plans for the 2019 season.

Activities will also be available for children, including the chance to be an archaeologist and dig for artefacts in our sandboxes, and living history demonstrations from a prehistoric flintknapper.

Led by Simon Miles, this one-day course will provide an introduction to the uses of GIS and QGIS for archaeological purposes. It is intended for newcomers to the key concepts and capabilities of the programme. Topics covered will include:

What is GIS?
Core principles of GIS
What is QGIS and why use  it?
Setup and install QGIS
Learning the basics of QGIS
(Loading, Styling and Editing data)
Finding Data

Led by Simon Miles, this one-day course will provide a more advanced overview to the uses of QGIS (a free and open source GIS application) for archaeological purposes. It will build upon the previous Introduction to GIS and QGIS workshops, but attending that course is not a prerequisite of attending this one.

Using actual site data, combined with a series of Open-Data sources we will explore how to use QGIS. We will look at pre excavation tasks such as geophysics, field walking and site grids, as well as post excavation find plotting, digitising of trenches and georeferencing.
