There will be beautiful floral displays and a mystic garden from Ashtead Garden Nurseries along with the Mayday Flower Club, and shows by local countryside groups including the Beekeepers!
The streets of Victorian Britain were crowded by poor and desperate people. Some broke the law just to survive, other became victims – even though over 200 crimes carried the death penalty. You could be hanged for anything from murder to pickpocketing and being out at night with a blackened face. Despite these harsh penalties, the criminal elements of society were still determined to make their living by ill-gotten gains.
A study day has been arranged to Kingston upon Thames.
The day begins with a visit to the Lovekyn Chapel. This is followed by a talk on Anglo-Saxon Kingston, a tour of All Saints Church, and a guided town walk with a stop off to view the remains of Kingston's medieval bridge. Please see the attached programme and application form for further details.
Visit the interesting excavations at this Roman Villa site where evidence of settlement during the Iron Age has been found. Followed by a tour around Felday Hillfort which is not only an Iron Age enclosure but also the site of a WW1 POW camp. You will be guided by Emma Corke (SyAS) and Dr Judie English (SyAS). The society librarian will be holding an Open Day at the new premises for members to view the new arrangements and familiarise themselves with the location. Parking is limited around the village but public transport is available between Redhill and Guildford. Refreshments will be available and the Abinger tea rooms will be open.
