Watching brief by J English of SyAS on drainage trench works revealed no evidence of any activity dating to earlier than the 19th century. (351)
Angel Court, Godalming
Evaluation by N Shaikhley of SCAU revealed the presence of a possible palaeochannel.
Hillbury Camp, Puttenham Common
Contour survey by D and A Graham of SyAS. The odd shape of the monument was found to be designed to take best advantage of the general slope of the land. A number of features were identified within the monument, including the likely sites of the original entrances and a number of Second World War artillery emplacements. The paths and bridleways which cross the area were found to be causing erosion of the monument in some places, and continuing tree encroachment on the site was noted as a cause for serious concern. Wheelers Farm, Thursley
Building survey by G Potter of CA prior to conversion to residential premises. A range of 18th century farm outbuildings was examined in detail, with further recording works and an archaeological watching brief planned to take place in 2002.
Soldier’s Ring, Crooksbury
Contour survey by D and A Graham of SyAS in advance of proposals to fell the pine trees on the site. The monument was found to be in a relatively good state of preservation, although evidence for erosion caused by walkers and horse riders was seen. (Bulletin 350)
Farnham Quarry, Runfold
Evaluation by G Hayman of SCAU in advance of further mineral extraction at the former Runfold Farm Pit revealed a number of features containing material of prehistoric and Roman date. Further work is planned in the areas that produced archaeological material.
Farnham Hospital, Farnham
Evaluation by N Roycroft of MoLAS prior to redevelopment revealed no finds or features of archaeological interest.
Frensham Common, Frensham
Evaluation by D Graham of SyAS of a mound thought to be one of the barrows mentioned by the Rev Charles Kerry, when he inspected the area in 1870. No evidence that the feature was other than a natural mound was revealed. (356)
Frensham Manor, Frensham
Gradiometer survey conducted by J Lucas of Southampton University. A pair of linear features were detected running parallel to the field boundary. These are thought to be relatively recent agricultural features. The outline of a ditch visible on aerial photographs of the area was also detected, as was a faint rectilinear feature, possibly a building. The results were promising, although it was thought that the ferruginous local geology might mean that a resistivity survey would provide clearer results.
22--24 West Street, Farnham
Watching brief by R Poulton of SCAU revealed that modern disturbance is likely to have removed any near surface archaeology, and the proposed redevelopment would not involve any excavations that would impact on any deep deposits.
