Ashtead Common villa and tileworks, Ashtead

Second season of excavation undertaken by D Bird for the Roman Studies Group of SyAS to improve understanding of the villa plan and its phasing, clarify the relationship between the approach road and the villa, and to gather information about the current state of preservation of the buried archaeological remains. Only two trenches were opened as the archaeology proved more complex than expected, but the excavation did reveal evidence to suggest that the villa started as a single line of rooms, and a hard-packed flint surface that was not fully explored appears to be in the right place to be the approach road. Magnetometer and topographical surveys were carried out by ASE around the villa and a possible building was identified. (406)
