Evaluation by J Robertson of SCAU on the site of a new residential block at the hotel illustrated that the area had been disturbed by modern rubbish disposal.

Ongoing evaluation by J Perry of SutAS in advance of residential redevelopment has so far revealed only modern deposits and features.

Archaeological recording of the lock by C Currie of CKCA for the National Trust, undertaken during repair works. Two phases of brickwork were recorded. Both sides were made of frogless bricks, suggesting a construction date before 1900 as most likely, with the phases distinguished by different mortar types. Documentary research has revealed that major repairs in concrete were carried out to the lock chamber in 1937, giving it the appearance it had prior to the present works.

Contour survey by D and A Graham of SyAS. The odd shape of the monument was found to be designed to take best advantage of the general slope of the land. A number of features were identified within the monument, including the likely sites of the original entrances and a number of Second World War artillery emplacements. The paths and bridleways which cross the area were found to be causing erosion of the monument in some places, and continuing tree encroachment on the site was noted as a cause for serious concern. Watching brief by P Jones of SCAU during building extension work revealed late 19th and 20th century rubble over post-medieval garden soils and river clay.

Watching brief by J Lander on behalf of EH revealed redeposited building material from the original construction of the house in the 1950s, but no evidence of activity relating to the abbey.

Survey undertaken under the direction of C Currie of CKCA, as part of the Community Archaeology Project for SCC and SyAS, to assess whether the study area was suitable for designation as an ASHLV. Both documentary research and fieldwork added greatly to existing knowledge of the area, and highlighted the presence of a range of archaeological remains dating from the Palaeolithic through to the Second World War.

Excavation by J English of SyAS as part of an ongoing landscape survey. Plough marks were noted, but thought to be a result of Second World War activities despite small amounts of prehistoric and Romano-British pottery being recovered. Further trenches recovered larger quantities of pottery, and noted two postholes (not excavated) suggestive of a Romano-British settlement in the vicinity. (354)

Watching brief by N Shaikhley of SCAU during the excavation of the foundation trenches for a new building revealed only a 19th century brick foundation wall and some late 19th or early 20th century stoneware jars.

Evaluation by S Anthony of TVAS in advance of residential redevelopment revealed only modern features, a few scattered struck flints of Neolithic or Bronze Age date, and a tiny piece of abraded, unidentifiable pottery.
