Stanwell

Excavation by M G O'Connell for SCC, DOE and Ready Mixed Concrete Ltd, in advance of gravel extraction, examined a large area of a crop mark complex including a prehistoric trackway and a hut probably of similar LBA/EIA date. (164)

Johnson and Clark, Staines

Excavation and watching brief by K Crouch for Staines Archaeological Unit and DOE, in advance of redevelopment, located RB levels, in particular part of the massive flint and mortar foundation of a building of the 1st century AD, the rubble from whose demolition in the 4th century filled a nearby well. Evidence for buildings from the 12th century was also recorded. (London Archaeol 3, 389)

Stanwell

Topsoil stripping observed by M G O’Connell and R J Poulton for SCC, DoE and British Airports Authority revealed various features; a (probable) LBA pit was recorded in detail. At TQ 053 746 fresh cursus sections were recorded in pipeline and road construction.

Kempton Park

Mammoth teeth and tusk and bones of woolly rhinoceros found in gravel extraction and reported by J J Chapman. Also found was a nearly complete pot, 3rd/4th century AD, presumably originally associated with a burial.

Stanwell

Beginning of major excavation by M G O’Connell for SCC, Hall Aggregates (Thames Valley) Ltd and DoE with assistance from the Manpower Services Commission via the Community Task Force. Initial work concentrated on the cursus in the north-east corner of the field.
