Guildford Museum will be closed for repairs for about four months from June 2019. All staff will move out, many exhibits will go into specialist storage and there will be no access to items currently on show or in store at Castle Arch until the museum re-opens. This is urgent maintenance and is not linked to possible redevelopment.
The Society was asked to vacate its office at Castle Arch for the duration of the work and has moved to the Research Centre at Abinger Hammer. Our normal open hours for the office ( and Library) will be:
Monday 10.00-4.00
Tuesday 10.30-2.00
Wednesday 10.00-4.00
First Saturday of each month 10.00-1.30

As part of the Mesolithic Hinterlands of Surrey project, run by Tom Lawrence (Oxford Archaeology), we will be running one weekend of community test pitting in August (17th-18th 10:00-16:00) utilising the flint methodology. This will be preceded by a training day at our Research Centre at Abinger on Saturday August 10th.
Participants of all ages are invited to book a slot for a full weekend of test-pitting at Nonsuch Park over Heritage Open Weekend (Saturday 21st-Sunday 22nd September) to undergo investigation of the Tudor Old Stables.
The Surrey Archaeological Society’s Research Centre and Library at Abinger will be open all day specially to the public, featuring displays on local research, finds from the area, and a chance to browse the collections.
Join one of the guided tours of the Surrey Archaeological Society excavations at Cocks Farm, Abinger, where the site of a Roman villa with a long period of occupation is currently undergoing fieldwork. Tours will include a look at what's going on in the trenches, as well as the finds which have come out.
Two tours will be on offer throughout the day:
11:00-12:00 and 14:00-15:00
On Saturday 3rd August, the annual Finding Farnham Festival will be back at the Museum of Farnham (11:00-16:00), where anyone can come along and have a try at digging, or simply watch the archaeologists investigate a pre-Georgian outbuilding!
The day will include a visit from the Butser IX Roman Legion and chance to look at the summer’s archaeology exhibit featuring some of the choicest artefacts from the region!
Finding Farnham is back, and Surrey Archaeological Society is running not one, but two community archaeology test pitting events in 2019 in Farnham!
On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th July, there will be two days of community test pitting (10:00-16:00) at Holt Pound, where members of the public are welcome to sign-up and have a try at digging, sieving or helping to process the finds.
Free for all - open to all ages
All sessions must be booked in advance – for info, contact outreach@surreyarchaeology.org.uk.
