RSG Study Day - Animal Bones in Roman Archaeology - Professor Anthony King

Primary tabs

Date:
Friday, 18 September, 2026 - 10:00 to 15:30

The Roman Studies Group is very pleased that Professor Anthony King, Emeritus Professor at Winchester University and a specialist in both animal bones and Roman archaeology, has kindly agreed to lead our 2026 RSG Study Day at East Horsley Village Hall on Friday 18 September 10.00am-3.30pm. The fee of £20 includes a sandwich lunch, coffee and tea. There is free parking at the Hall.

As this is a hands-on event there is a limit of 20 places and bookings are now open via the book tab above.

Roman Studies Group members have the first option but any spare places will be offered to other Society members.

Professor King will give two introductory sessions. Firstly, methods and approaches, including excavation and sampling strategies, and secondly, interpreting results in the Roman context, discussing key research questions and how these can be addressed. The afternoon will include a practical session on anatomy, identification and recording, with specimens from his own collection.

This should be an excellent preparation for the study day on A Practical Introduction to Animal Bones in Archaeology to be led by Sarah Green, MA Southampton, organised by the Prehistoric Group for Saturday November 7 2026 at the Leatherhead Institute.
