Text: 'The Ladder of the Salvation of the Human Soul, and the Road to Heaven.'
Discovered under white wash in 1870. Painted in tempera in about 1200, probably by a monk of Chertsey. A band of cloud separates Heaven from Hell. In right hand lower corner is the Tree of Knowledge with the Serpent. Next, a Bridge of Spikes on which are cheating tradesmen, a milkman with tithe of milk, woolworkers, a mason and a smith. Below, a usurer with money-bags around him is tortured over flames. In the centre of picture is a ladder, some climbing souls fail and are carried off by a demon, others reach Paradise: at the top is Christ. A dog knaws a woman's hand for feeding her pet rather than the poor. Next, comes a drunken pilgrim with a bottle. Demons boil murderers in a huge cauldron. A dog-like demon bites the feet of lewd dancers. Above, St. Michael weighs souls. An angel leads the three Marys, another carries the penitent thief to Paradise and a third helps Enoch and Elijah to mount the ladder. Christ 'harrows hell,' trampling on Satan bound, and rescuing souls from Purgatory. The dedication cross is at the lower edge of the painting. (Copyright).
