Roman Southampton was important but can be enigmatic, not least because so much material went into the River Itchen in the nineteenth century. Dedicated archaeologists have been piecing together the evidence since the 1920s and we are fortunate that Andy Skinner can introduce us to the setting of Roman Southampton and explore its known history and archaeology. Andy works at Southampton Museums and Art Gallery in their lifelong learning team.
Andy will discuss the founding of the Roman port at Bitterne on the east side of the River Itchen and the Roman piers and settlement at St Denys on the opposite side. The sites went through several phases of development until the end of the Roman period, including as a merchant port and as a defensive position. Andy will describe what is known of the local Roman road network and offer some insights into the nearby Roman settlement at Nursling and links to Roman Isle of Wight.
The talk will take place by Zoom and the link will be sent to RSG members a week in advance.
The link will open at 7.15pm and the talk will start at 7.30pm.
If you would like to join the Zoom talk and you are a member of SyAS, you can join RSG for free via the membership tab.
