Stane Street excavations - walk and lunch in local pub

Thursday June 18

Roman Studies Group is organising a vist to see the excavations taking place on Stane Street in Ockley which will include lunch and tea (if you so wish) at the local pub. The walk will be led by Chris Gibson who has been leading the work there.

10.30-11.00 Park, coffee, pre-order and pay for lunch at the Punchbowl Inn, Okewood Hill (near Ockley) RH5 5PU.

11.00-1.00 walk from the pub and turn into fields to follow the line of Stane Street towards Okewood Stream. Consider the steep slope down to the stream, and the great difficulty of maintaining a straight line. Inspect terrace cut into the slope to the west and view trenches Chris Gibson and colleagues have excavated to show Stane Street did not follow the Ordnance Survey line but made a significant diversion. Discuss alternative interpretations and construction techniques. Return to the Punchbowl for lunch at 1.00.

Total walking distance about 1 mile. The fields can be very muddy if wet.

2.30 Presentation on the practicalities of Roman horse harness designs by expert and Society member Gail Brownrigg, and an opportunity to study early maps of the area.

3.30 Tea and depart
