SIHG holds regular short talks at Leatherhead Oddfellows Hall and by Zoom between September and May, and occasional days out. Membership is FREE until at least May 2026. To join, please email membership@sihg.org.uk(link sends e-mail)
Our talks programme includes presentations on railways, air transport, canals, the industrial revolution and industrial archaeology, and some talks with a strong element of social history, often focusing on the lives of industrial workers of the past. We even have occasional with a strong arts and crafts content. Many, but not all, of our talks pertain to Surrey industries, including aviation, brewing, automobile development, brickmaking, glassmaking and iron working, among many others.
We also run half-day trips for our members; recent ones have included the Rural Life Museum, the Industrial Archaeology of Farnham and an "Engineers and scientists" tour of Kensal Green Cemetery; in 2026 we have a guided walk from Shalford, "How Railways Killed a Canal", and we plan to do a tour of wind tunnel and museum at the Farnborough Royal Aircraft Establishment .
SIHG differs from other groups in the Surrey Archaeological Society (SYAS) in that, because of the nature of SIHG's activity, it is not necessary to belong to SYAS in order to become a member of SIHG.
SIHG gave a "Conservation Award" Plaque annually until 2022, we have re-introduced this award in 2025. We plan to add an external link to a list of previous award winners when our website is updated in 2026. We'll also add information about the many industrial history projects in Surrey that SIHG have been involved in over the years.
SIHG is a founding member of the Southeast Region Industrial Archaeology Conference (SERIAC) and is affiliated to the National Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA).
