SIHG Talk: "Vickers at Brooklands" by Richard Marks (Zoom)

Date:
Thursday, 17 September, 2026 - 19:30

Before 1909, there were no purpose-built automobile racing tracks in the world. All racing was carried out on normal roads. Hugh Fortesque Locke King decided to build the first track on his estate at Brooklands. The building virtually bankrupted him and certainly put a strain on his health. Brooklands also became the birthplace of British aviation, with some of the most famous innovators and flyers basing themselves there. We look at the closure due to the Great War and then the amazing heyday of British racing with names like Campbell, Cobb and Segrave in the interwar period. Then, sad closure and the end of Brooklands as a racing circuit in the Second World War. We look at the growth of the aviation industry and its final closure at Brooklands. Then, like a phoenix from the ashes, the Brooklands museum has preserved many of the older buildings, along with many iconic cars and aircraft.

This is a joint SIHG/DLHG event.
