RSG AGM and Zoom talk by Dr. Kris Lockyer on 'Mapping Verulamium'

Date:
Tuesday, 7 October, 2025 - 19:30 to 21:00

The RSG AGM will take place following the talk by Dr. Kris Lockyer.

Mapping Verulamium

Since 2013 the Community Archaeology Geophysics Group (CAGG) have been undertaking surveys of the Roman city.  Verulamium, the 3rd biggest city in Roman Britain, mainly lies under either public or private parkland, making it ideal for geophysics.  The group now employs four survey techniques: magnetometry, Earth Resistance survey, Ground Penetrating Radar and magnetic susceptibility.  The talk will briefly introduce the site, and the four survey methods before going on to highlight some of the features we have found.

 Kris Lockyear

Kris is a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL.  He became interested in archaeology as a result of a school visit to Verulamium in 1975 and joined the Welwyn Archaeological Society (WAS) later that year, aged 11!  In 2009 he became the Director of WAS.  In 2013, with the aid of a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, he founded CAGG which he now leads.  The group has gone on to survey over 70 sites, mainly in and around Hertfordshire.

The talk will take place by Zoom and the link will be sent to RSG members a week in advance.

The link will open at 7.15pm and the talk will start at 7.30pm.

If you would like to join the Zoom talk and you are a member of SYaS, you can join RSG for free via the membership tab.
