Land near Abinger Hammer

Watching brief by G Rapson of MOLA during underground cabling works. The majority of the route was located on the Greensand ridge where cable was laid by mole-plough allowing limited opportunities for investigation, although worked flint dating to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods was observed in ploughed fields. Two undated drainage features 5m apart were revealed during open-cut excavation carried out along the eastern side of Hammer Meadow, a field containing channels and earthworks relating to post-medieval water management.

Land at Epsom Road, Merrow

Soil-stripping, mapping and sampling by J Robertson and N Randall of SCAU, during the creation of a park and ride facility, following evaluation in 2007. A comparatively large number of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age features were revealed, including pits, ditches and stakeholes. Evidence of activity from the Neolithic to Early Iron Age was evident in the finds assemblage.

The Crossways, Abinger

Fieldwalking by N Cowlard of the SyAS Roman Studies Group close to the Cocks Farm villa recovered Mesolithic blades and flakes, a Neolithic spearhead and a number of scrapers, evidence of post-medieval activity, and a Second World War bomb, but no finds of Roman date. (405)

Land at Epsom Road, Merrow

Evaluation by N Shaikhley of SCAU prior to the creation of a golf course. Only the areas of proposed holes 1–9 were examined, with a second phase planned for the remainder of the site. A large number of trenches were negative. However, evidence for possible Neolithic flint-mining activity was recorded in one area, in the form of sinuous conjoined irregular pits that appeared to be following flint seams within the chalk natural. Further features, some perhaps indicative of in-situ flint knapping, were also revealed.

Hatch Furlong, Ewell

Second season of excavation led by H Sheldon of BC and J Cotton of EEHAS, on an area of higher ground overlooking the Roman settlement of Ewell and Stane Street and where traces of Roman activity were located in the 1970s. Four trenches were opened in a line running north–south between those excavated in 2006.

Mere Park, Nutfield

Watching brief by R Lambert of SCAU during the installation of a pipeline. Much of the area of impact was found to be previously disturbed ground. One area did demonstrate an intact stratigraphic soil profile, and a small number of Neolithic/Bronze Age flints were encountered residually in the subsoil. However, no features were observed.

Reigate town centre, Reigate

Watching brief by J Robertson of SCAU during the construction of a pipeline from the High Street at Reigate Methodist church into Priory Park. A number of features probably relating to the 18th century geometric kitchen gardens were revealed within the park, as well as the remains of a possible former trackway. Elsewhere, an apparent buried medieval soil layer produced 13th and 14th century pottery, and the area around the Methodist church and towards the High Street revealed evidence from probable boundary walls and a cellar of post-medieval date.

Rookery Farm, Kingswood

Fieldwalking by P Harp of Plateau, following on from excavations and fieldwalking in the area in 2002 and 2003. Palaeolithic surface material continued to be collected. Although most post-glacial flintwork was left in situ and unrecorded, some examples of Mesolithic axes and Neolithic/Bronze Age arrowheads were recovered.
