4-8 Cheam Road, Ewell

Monitoring by A Haslam of PCA during demolition works and the removal of intrusive features, including a number of petrol tanks, revealed evidence of extensive modern made ground and no finds or features of archaeological interest. Police subsequently informed of skeletal remains and PCA did further observation.

The Looe, Reigate Road, Ewell

Excavation (1946-9, by T.K. Walls) of part of a 'native' farmstead of 1st century BC and 1st century AD, with residual material of late 5th and 4th century BC, reported by J.F. Cotton. Notable finds include 9 inscribed bone counters, (Britannia 8 (1977), 445 and fig 30). (145; report in SyAC 88, 1-42)

2-46 West Street, Ewell

Excavation and site watching by R J Poulton and M G O'Connell for SCC and Epsom and Ewell Borough Council in advance of redevelopment. An undated chalk cellar and well were found aligned to West Street but not related to the most recent buildings on site. A substantial amount of RB tile and pottery (especially 2nd century) was found associated with a cobbled surface (?yard). (208; see this volume for report)

Ewell By-Pass

Trial excavations and observation by S P Dyer for SCAU and SCC (County Engineer's Department) in advance of road construction located only a few unstratified RB sherds.
