Group visit to The Celts Exhibition at The British Museum

An RSG visit which includes a lecture about the Celts and entry to the Celts exhibition at the British Museum has been arranged for Thursday 28 January 2016.
At the close of the seventh and final season of excavations on this important medieval and Tudor site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, there is to be a Special Archaeological Open Day, hosted by the Friends of Woking Palace. In addition to guided tours of the trenches there will be a display of finds recovered from the site together with a range of stalls hosted by local heritage bodies. Parking is either in Old Woking or at Hoebridge School from where a minibus shuttle service will run to Woking Palace between 11am and 4.30pm approx.
After a short AGM, the 33rd Annual Conservation Plaque will be awarded to Farnham Pottery.
Then a short talk and refreshments, will be followed by a guided tour of the site.

The programme for the day incorporates a private tour of the Roman Bath and Museum.
This visit will complement and expand on Sadie Watson’s evening talk to RSG members on 3 February. There will be a talk from Sadie, followed by another from one of MOLA’s Roman Registered Finds Specialists with artefacts available to look at. We will also be taken around the processing area to see the washing and processing of finds from different sites. It is hoped that by March there will be human remains from the excavations at Liverpool Street.

A visit has been arranged to see the medieval aspects of this city. The day will start with a tour of the Cathedral at 11am followed by visits to the Cathedral Precincts, the Bishop's Palace and St Mary's Hospital. The afternoon will close with a walking tour of medieval Chichester taking in a variety of the principal sites. The day will be led by Peter Balmer.
The meeting point will be Chichester Cathedral, West Street. Attendance will be by ticket costing £8, available from the Society's office at Castle Arch in Guildford. The detailed programme and application form is attached.
After a short AGM, there will be a talk by Emma Corke, SyAS President, about the Abinger Hall water pumping system followed by a site visit.
Refreshments will be provided.
