Heritage Open Day: Abinger Research Centre

The Society Library will be open for Heritage Open Day. You are welcome to visit us to talk to the librarian and volunteers about not only the library but also the work being undertaken by the library volunteers and a number of specialist groups of the Society. New members are invited to come along and explore what the Research Centre can offer. Refreshments will be available.

Visit to Stane Street excavations in Ockley - booking essential

Stane Street excavations - walk and lunch in local pub

Thursday June 18

Roman Studies Group is organising a vist to see the excavations taking place on Stane Street in Ockley which will include lunch and tea (if you so wish) at the local pub. The walk will be led by Chris Gibson who has been leading the work there.

10.30-11.00 Park, coffee, pre-order and pay for lunch at the Punchbowl Inn, Okewood Hill (near Ockley) RH5 5PU.

Heritage Open Day

The Research Centre of Surrey Archaeological Society will be open to visitors for a Heritage Open Day on this date. A group working on the study of medieval pottery will be there and members will be happy to discuss their work. Visitors are welcome to explore the library and to ask about any journals and pamphlets of interest to them. Some displays from other groups will also be available to view.

The centre can be found opposite the recently closed Abinger Cookery School in Hackhurst Lane.

Exploring the Medieval Chaldon area

We will meet in the Farthing Downs car park at 10am for a guided tour of the Downs by the ranger, Thomas Oliver. Tom, who is the Conservation Ranger for City of London Corporation, will talk about the use of the Downs throughout history, including the Iron Age site and the many Saxon graves. The leisurely walk will take about 1.5 to 2 hours with the route following a flat grassy path on the top of the downs with a few gentle slopes. In summer this should not be slippery. The total length of the route is around 1-2km and we will finish at the car park where there are toilets.

Southwark Roman Day

The Conservation and Heritage teams at Southwark will be holding a Roman Day at the Heritage Centre, 147 Walworth Road, Southwark.  The morning will consist of the opportunity for people to see some Roman material from the Southwark collection and material excavated by some of the archaeological companies who work regularly within the borough. In the afternoon there will be three talks about the roman archaeology of Southwark, roman roads, burial grounds and settlement, largely focused on Landmark Court.
