Ashtead Roman villa and tileworks 2007

A second season of excavation took place from late August to mid-September. The aim this year was to tackle some of the questions arising from the old villa excavation and also to test some of the possible buildings nearby, previously identified by John Hampton and Tony Clark. One of these possible buildings has recently been relocated by magnetometer survey.

A number of trenches were opened at the villa, with some of them kept small with the intention of testing wall junctions to see if it was possible to gain some understanding of the way in which the villa plan developed. The main piece of work took place on the area of the porch, in an attempt to see what happened to the approach road and to test within the area said by Lowther to be destroyed for his reported pre-villa levels. The aim will always be to leave walls and floors in situ and only test down to natural where this will assist with comparative dating and will not involve the destruction of significant intact archaeology.

Further work is planned in 2008.
