Sam Moorhead is the national Finds Adviser  for Iron Age and Roman Coins at the British Museum. For the Portable Antiquities Scheme. His main responsibilities are to ensure the quality of the records entered and to initiate and carry out research. The PAS database has records for over 86,000 Roman coins and contains highly important assemblages which are both reliable and valid for research purposes.

It seems to have become the accepted wisdom that late Roman London was in serious decline, with large empty areas, but careful consideration of the evidence suggests that this is a false picture. James Gerrard will share his thoughts on the topic, sparked in part by his study of the finds from the Drapers Gardens site, about which he gave a fascinating talk to the Group last year. Understanding London in this period is of course crucial to any consideration of what was going on in the Surrey area in the late and sub-Roman

This site on the southern edge of Roman Southwark was dug in advance of redevelopment by PCA. It proved to contain important evidence for a religious complex with probably two Romano-Celtic temples and an associated building. There were many associated finds including the now famous Mars Camulos inscription and the sealed canister that proved to contain expensive ointment. Southwark was Surrey's nearest Roman centre of any consequence and this ritual
