It
seems to have become the accepted wisdom that late Roman London was in serious
decline, with large empty areas, but careful consideration of the evidence
suggests that this is a false picture. James Gerrard will share his thoughts on
the topic, sparked in part by his study of the finds from the Drapers Gardens
site, about which he gave a fascinating talk to the Group last year.
Understanding London in this period is of course crucial to any consideration of
what was going on in the Surrey area in the late and sub-Roman
period.
